Recycled Paper:
1. Soak scraps of old paper in warm water for about 10 minutes. Some paper takes longer so be patient

2. Then beat the paper and water with a whisk until the water is mushy and full of paper fibres. That’s pulp.

3. Add a little bit of food colouring, otherwise it’ll look a bit grey, then slide a fine wire mesh into the water and lift it up through the paper pulp so that a thin layer is caught in the mesh.

4. Let the water drip off, then carefully put it fibre side down on one side of your newspaper. This is going to be your blotting paper to soak up the excess water.

5. Lift up the mesh so the fibres are left behind and close the newspaper over the top of your recycled paper.

6. Put something heavy on it and leave it for a few days or if you’re in a hurry, press the sheets with a rolling pin and iron them or get a grown up to do it for you, until they’re dry.

And there it is, recycled paper!

Bird Feeder:

1.  Get a piece or a few pieces of stale bread and spread them on one side with peanut butter. Birds love it.

2.  Place some nuts or seeds on a plate and lay the bread peanut butter side down in the nuts, pressing gently to coat it well…

3. Use something small and round like a drinking straw to poke a hole near the centre of the bread.

4. Pull the string through the bread, tie a knot in it and you’re ready to hang it in a tree…

See, told you it was easy!

Making Compost:

1.  Cut the top and bottom off a cardboard box, then cut several 3cm slits in each of the four walls to allow air to get into heap.  Get a grown up to help you if you’re little.

2.  Place the box over an area of soil so earthworms can burrow up into the compost and help digest waste

3.  Add fruit and veg scraps, but no bread, meat, dairy or citrus scraps because they encourage animals. You can also put garden waste in your compost like grass clippings and dead leaves. And finally add manure to the heap.

4.  You have to keep compost moist but not really wet. So cover it to protect it from rain and give it a little sprinkle of water every now and then. Pretty easy, huh?
