The Winged Thing: Mission Briefing

Q: When is the Winged Thing operational?

A: Intergalactic travel began at 6:00pm, (AEST) September 18th, 1998. And now, the service is continuous. (Since then, it has flown over 18,000 kid-piloted missions!)

Q: How do you fly the Winged Thing?

A: Just click on the Winged Thing ship and after a short loading time, only 2 or 3 minutes, you’ll find yourself in the Winged Thing cockpit. All instructions are displayed on-screen in real time.

Q: What powers the Winged Thing?

A: Geese.

Q: Who are the best pilots?

A: Kids (and all those who hanker for new lives beyond the stars…)

Q: Where can I go?

A: Anywhere in the vastness of space. Just point, click and you’re there. (Remember, time is relative.)

Q: What will I find?

A: Planets of many different kinds, some earthlike, some very alien, with different weather systems and life forms. And by the way, things can change behind your back when you’re busy boldly going where no human (or goose) has gone before…

Q: What can I do there?

A: If you like a particular planet, you can choose to add buildings. On the other hand, if you like your planets unspoiled, you can just enjoy the view.

Q: How about aliens?

A: You never know what you might discover in the Winged Thing Secret Laboratory.

Q: Isn’t space travel boring?

A: Not if you’re a kid. Besides, if the travelling should get you down, you can always pass the time playing Space Egg Elastico or trying out for your navigator's license. Or, just click the hyper-drive button. Vvrrrrrrrraaaammmmm! You're there.

Q: When I've named a planet, how do I get back there?

A: Look for flashing lights coming from space! Then, roll your mouse over them to see which planet is which.

Q: What do I do when I have filled up the universe with my newly discovered planets?

A: Just start to explore a fresh universe by entering different initials when you check into the Winged Thing.

Q: How do I get my Mission Certificate?

A: Quit the Winged Thing and wait for your certificate to appear on screen. Then print it out to prove you're a Galactic Great. Depending on how many Winged Thing missions you fly, you will receive a different rank and a matching Winged Thing Mission Certificate to boot!

Q: What do I need to blast off?

A: You need:

* An internet-enabled computer

* A cookie-enabled browser

* The Shockwave Player plug-in - pretty much standard issue these days, but try the HELP button if you have trouble.

* Oh yes, and the right stuff.

Q: Who made the Winged Thing?

A: It was a joint effort by Nickelodeon Australia, Click Interactive Sydney and the geese.
